Anavar (Oxandrolone): Dosage, Results and Side Effects
Best Anabolic Steroids
Independent research & quality review desk
Anavar is oxandrolone, an oral steroid that does not turn into estrogen and does not hold water. The FDA label starts at 2.5 mg a day for wasting conditions, while athletic use sits far higher, at 20 to 50 mg a day for six to eight weeks. This page sets out both, what the drug actually does, and which blood markers move first.
What Anavar is
Oxandrolone is a 17-alpha-alkylated oral anabolic steroid. It is still prescribed today, mostly for weight restoration after surgery, trauma or chronic infection, and it is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States.
Two properties shape everything else about it. It does not aromatise, so it cannot convert to estradiol and does not cause gynecomastia. And because it is alkylated, it survives the first pass through the liver, which is exactly why the liver carries the cost.
- Half-life is about 10.4 hours in younger adults and 13.3 hours in the elderly, according to the label, so a daily dose is split into two.
- It does not aromatise: no water, no estrogenic breast tissue.
- It is 17-alpha-alkylated: liver enzymes are the first marker to move.
- The FDA label dose is 2.5 to 20 mg a day; athletic use is far higher.
- It does not build mass like testosterone or Dianabol, and it is not a fat burner.
What it does and does not do
In clinical settings oxandrolone does one thing reliably: it helps the body hold and regain lean tissue when calories and recovery are compromised. That is why the trials that exist are in burn recovery, HIV-associated wasting and similar states, not in trained athletes eating a surplus.
In athletic use the reported effect is narrower than the marketing suggests. Strength holds or climbs slightly in a calorie deficit, muscle looks denser, and body weight drops slowly while lean mass stays. What it does not do is add size quickly, burn fat on its own, or replace a testosterone base in a serious cycle.
Dosage
There are two different numbers in circulation and they should not be mixed. The label dose is a clinical one, set for recovery from illness. Athletic doses come from user practice and are five to ten times higher, with a matching rise in liver and lipid effects.
| Setting | Daily dose | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| FDA label, adults | 2.5 to 20 mg | 2 to 4 weeks, repeatable | Split into 2 to 4 doses, reviewed by a physician |
| First athletic run, men | 20 to 30 mg | 6 weeks | Two doses, ten to twelve hours apart |
| Intermediate, men | 40 to 50 mg | 6 to 8 weeks | Above this, side effects rise faster than results |
| Women | 5 to 10 mg | 4 to 6 weeks | Voice change is the stop signal, not a dose to lower |
Splitting the dose matters because of the half-life: about 10.4 hours in younger adults on the label. A single 40 mg dose in the morning gives a peak and a long trough; two 20 mg doses keep the level closer to flat and usually reduce the joint ache reported at higher doses.
Cycle length and what to expect
Nothing visible happens in the first week. The timeline below is what people report most often at 30 to 40 mg a day, in a deficit, with training unchanged.
| Period | What changes |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Nothing visible. Slightly better pumps and endurance in training. |
| Weeks 2 to 3 | Strength holds in a deficit instead of falling. Joints feel the same or better. |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | The visible part: muscle looks harder and fuller at the same or lower body weight. |
| After stopping | Strength slips back over two to three weeks. The muscle that was protected stays. |
Side effects
Almost everything on this list is dose and duration dependent. At the label dose the drug is well tolerated; at 40 to 50 mg a day for eight weeks, the picture changes.
- Liver enzymes. ALT and AST rise within weeks. Values usually return to baseline four to six weeks after the course ends.
- Lipids. HDL falls, sometimes sharply, and LDL tends to rise. This is the most consistent change in the literature on oral steroids.
- Joint ache. Reported at higher doses, and usually the first sign that the dose is above what the user needs.
- Virilisation in women. Voice changes, clitoral enlargement and facial hair at doses that men consider low. The voice change does not reverse.
- Suppression of natural testosterone. Milder than testosterone itself, but real. A short recovery protocol is still needed.
Blood work
The point of testing is to catch the liver and lipid changes early enough to stop, and to know whether the axis restarted afterwards.
| When | What to test |
|---|---|
| Before the course | ALT, AST, full lipid panel, total testosterone, estradiol, full blood count |
| Week 4 | ALT, AST, lipids, blood pressure log |
| Four to six weeks after | ALT, AST, lipids, total testosterone and LH |
Reference ranges matter less than the change from your own baseline. An ALT that doubled from 20 to 40 is still inside the reference range, but it is a signal.
Where it sits in a stack
Anavar is a finisher, not a base. It works best in the last weeks of a cut, on top of a testosterone dose that is already established, or as a low dose option for people who avoid injections.
- With a short testosterone ester for a dry cut: our testosterone shelf.
- With turinabol for an oral only stack: turinabol.
- Every oxandrolone presentation: Anavar and oxandrolone cards.
- Recovery afterwards: post cycle therapy.
What the data shows
The honest summary: the pharmacology is well understood, the clinical use is narrow, and the athletic use is extrapolated. Anyone quoting a study for a 50 mg athletic cycle is quoting something that does not exist.
Buying and checking a pack
Oxandrolone is one of the most counterfeited orals, mostly because 10 mg tablets are small and easy to press with any powder inside. Three checks catch most of the problem.
- Batch on the box and on the blister. If the two do not match, stop there.
- Certificate of analysis. A real one names the batch and shows a chromatogram, not a generic purity claim.
- Sealed tub and sharp print. A tub that opens without a seal, or print that looks photocopied, is a different product from the one on the card.
Every oxandrolone card in our catalogue states the strength and the pack size, so the comparison with the physical pack takes a minute.
