Testosterone Cycle: Dosages, Variations and Length
Best Anabolic Steroids
Independent research & quality review desk
A testosterone cycle is defined by four variables, not one: dose, ester, length and what else runs with it. This page sets out the working variations, from a first 250 mg cycle to a 750 mg block, with the injection schedule, the blood work and the exit plan for each. The numbers come from labelling and from dose-response studies, and where the evidence stops, it says so.

What a cycle is
A cycle is a defined period of exogenous testosterone followed by a defined end. During it the pituitary stops sending luteinising hormone, so the testes produce almost nothing of their own. That is true at 250 mg a week and at 750 mg: the dose changes how much effect and how much suppression, not whether the axis shuts down.
The practical consequence is that every cycle needs an exit: a date for the last injection, a wait for clearance, and a recovery plan. A cycle without an exit is not a cycle, it is an unplanned long-term course.
The four variables
| Variable | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Weekly dose | Size of the effect and of the side effects; the dose-response is real but flattening |
| Ester | Injection frequency, peak and trough, how long clearance takes |
| Length | How much of the gain is consolidated and how hard recovery is |
| What else runs | An oral kickstart, an aromatase inhibitor, a second injectable |
Variation 1: first cycle
The point of a first cycle is information: how your body handles estrogen, blood pressure and recovery with one variable. Everything else can be added later, once that baseline exists.
| Parameter | Setting |
|---|---|
| Dose | 250 to 300 mg a week |
| Ester | Enanthate or cypionate, injected twice a week |
| Length | 8 to 10 weeks |
| Additional compounds | None. An aromatase inhibitor only on blood work, not as a precaution |
| Blood work | Baseline, week 6, and four to six weeks after recovery |
Two injections a week keep the level flatter than one weekly shot and reduce the peak and trough swing that shows up as mood and acne changes.
Variation 2: the 500 mg standard
500 mg a week for 12 weeks is the most common intermediate layout, and it sits in the range where dose-response studies show clear gains in strength and lean mass. It is not a beginner dose: water retention, blood pressure and haematocrit all move at this level.
| Parameter | Setting |
|---|---|
| Dose | 500 mg a week, split into two injections |
| Ester | Enanthate or cypionate |
| Length | 12 weeks |
| Estrogen control | Anastrozole only if estradiol is high on a panel or symptoms appear |
| Expected change | Strength up across the block; lean mass up single digits in kilos over 12 weeks, depending on food and training |
Variation 3: low dose and TRT
There is a large gap between replacement and a cycle, and it is worth understanding rather than blurring. Replacement doses sit around 75 to 100 mg a week in clinical practice; a low-dose cycle sits at 200 to 250 mg, which is still two to three times replacement.
| Layout | Dose | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement | 75 to 100 mg a week, or the equivalent every two weeks | Bring low testosterone into the normal range under supervision |
| Low-dose cycle | 200 to 250 mg a week for 8 to 10 weeks | Modest gains with a gentler side effect profile |
| Bridge (not recommended) | 100 to 150 mg continuously | Keeps the axis suppressed indefinitely without a cycle or a plan |
Variation 4: high dose
Above 500 mg the curve flattens. Dose-response work shows strength and lean mass still rising with dose, but the side effect list grows faster: haematocrit, blood pressure, lipids and estrogenic effects all scale with the weekly amount.
| Dose | What changes versus 500 mg |
|---|---|
| 600 to 750 mg | Some extra lean mass, more water, higher haematocrit and pressure, harder recovery |
| Above 750 mg | Diminishing returns with a steeper side effect curve; rarely justified outside supervised settings |
Esters: same dose, different curve
The ester decides frequency and tail, not potency. The label for testosterone cypionate puts the intramuscular half-life at about eight days, which is why once or twice weekly works. Propionate is measured in days, so it needs every-other-day injections.
| Ester | Injection rhythm | Clearance after last shot |
|---|---|---|
| Propionate | Every other day | 3 to 4 days |
| Phenylpropionate | Every other day to twice a week | About 5 days |
| Enanthate | Twice a week | 10 to 14 days |
| Cypionate | Twice a week | 14 to 18 days |
| Blend of four to five esters | Twice a week | 2 to 3 weeks |
How long to run it
| Length | Who it suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 weeks | Short esters, a cut, a first look at tolerance | Gains are modest; the cycle ends before the plateau |
| 10 weeks | Most first and second cycles | The usual balance between result and recovery |
| 12 weeks | The 500 mg standard | Gains flatten late; the last two weeks are mostly maintenance |
| 16 weeks | Long esters with a specific goal | Harder recovery, more blood work, longer wait before PCT |
Cycle by goal
| Goal | Layout |
|---|---|
| Mass | 500 mg enanthate or cypionate for 12 weeks, calories in surplus, an oral in the first four weeks if used |
| Cut | 300 to 400 mg a week of the same ester, or 300 mg propionate, for 8 to 10 weeks in a deficit |
| Recomposition | 250 to 300 mg for 10 to 12 weeks, calories near maintenance, training volume steady |
| Strength block | 500 mg for 8 to 10 weeks, low reps, an oral in the last four weeks if used |
What changes between these layouts is mostly food and training, not milligrams. A cut on 500 mg and a cut on 300 mg look similar in the mirror; the difference shows up in water and blood pressure.
Kickstart with an oral
A long ester takes three to four weeks to reach a stable level, so some cycles add an oral for the first four weeks to move the scale sooner. It is optional, and it doubles the number of variables a first cycle is trying to observe.
- What it buys: earlier strength and weight, mostly water and glycogen in the first ten days.
- What it costs: liver enzymes, lipids, and a second compound to judge.
- When it makes sense: a second or third cycle, not the first.
Injection schedule
Twice a week is the default for long esters: for example Monday morning and Thursday evening. It halves the peak and trough compared with a single weekly shot, and most people report fewer mood swings and less acne on the split schedule.
Rotate sites, use a fresh needle for drawing and for injecting, and keep the same days each week. A missed dose is taken when remembered if the gap is short, rather than doubled at the next injection.
Blood work
| When | What to test |
|---|---|
| Before the cycle | Total testosterone, estradiol, LH, FSH, full blood count, lipids, ALT and AST |
| Week 6 | Total testosterone, sensitive estradiol, haematocrit, lipids, blood pressure log |
| End of cycle | The same panel plus LH and FSH, to see how suppressed the axis is |
| After recovery | Total testosterone, LH, FSH and estradiol, four to six weeks after the protocol ends |
Haematocrit and blood pressure are the two numbers that move first and matter most. Dose-response work shows red cell production rising with dose, so a 500 mg cycle and a 750 mg cycle do not need the same monitoring.
What to expect week by week
| Period | What happens |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1 to 2 | Little visible; libido and appetite often rise first |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | The level stabilises, strength starts to climb, water retention appears |
| Weeks 5 to 8 | The clearest gains of the cycle |
| Weeks 9 to 12 | Gains flatten on the same dose, which is the signal to end rather than raise |
| After the last injection | A dip in energy and libido until clearance and recovery |
Coming off
The exit is set by the ester. Propionate clears in three to four days, cypionate in fourteen to eighteen, and a blend in two to three weeks. A recovery protocol starts after that point, not on the day of the last injection.
The full protocol, with the timing table and the blood markers, is on the post-cycle therapy page.
