Dianabol: Dosage, Water Retention and What Not to Expect
Best Anabolic Steroids
Independent research & quality review desk
Dianabol is methandienone, an oral that adds weight fast and adds water just as fast. Twenty to fifty milligrams a day for four to six weeks is the usual range, and most of what appears in the first two weeks is not muscle. This page covers what it does, what it costs, and why it is a kickstart rather than a base.
- Oral methandienone, 17-alpha-alkylated, so the liver carries the cost.
- It aromatises to methylestradiol, which is why water and gynecomastia risk are high.
- Typical range is 20 to 50 mg a day, split into two or three doses.
- Four to six weeks is the usual block; longer runs raise liver enzymes.
- Weight gain in the first two weeks is mostly water and glycogen.
What it is
Methandienone, sold historically as Dianabol, is an oral anabolic steroid with a 17-alpha-alkyl group that lets it survive the first pass through the liver. It was designed in the 1950s for clinical use and became the classic mass oral of the following decades.
Two properties define its behaviour. It aromatises, and the resulting methylestradiol is more potent in water retention than the estradiol produced from testosterone. And being alkylated, it is hard on the liver in a way that injectable testosterone is not.
What it does
| Effect | What it looks like in practice |
|---|---|
| Weight gain | Fast, several kilos in the first two weeks, much of it water and glycogen |
| Strength | Climbs within two weeks, often the first noticeable change |
| Muscle fullness | Visible quickly because of intracellular water, not new tissue |
| Appetite | Often increases, which helps a surplus |
| Blood pressure | Rises with water and with the drug itself |
Dosage
There is no current US labelling to quote for methandienone, so the numbers here come from long-standing practice rather than from a modern label. That is a reason for caution, not a reason to guess higher.
| Level | Daily dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 10 to 20 mg | Fewer water and pressure effects, slower weight gain |
| Common | 20 to 30 mg | The usual range for a kickstart |
| High | 40 to 50 mg | More water, more pressure, more liver load, not more muscle proportionally |
The daily total is usually split into two or three doses. The drug is short acting, which is why a single morning dose gives a sharp peak and a long trough rather than a steady level.
Cycle length
Four to six weeks. The liver sets the limit here, not the muscle: enzyme rises are dose and duration dependent, and the compound is not designed for a twelve-week run. Using it as the opening four weeks of a longer injectable cycle is the common approach.
Water retention and blood pressure
Water is the signature effect and the first thing to manage. It shows as facial puffiness, swollen ankles in some people, and a rapid scale jump. Blood pressure follows the water, and both respond to dose.
| Sign | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Rapid weight gain, puffy face | Water retention, expected at 30 mg and above |
| Rising home blood pressure readings | Reason to reduce the dose or stop, not to add another drug |
| Swollen ankles, shortness of breath | Stop and get medical advice |
Liver and lipids
As a 17-alpha-alkylated oral, methandienone is associated with raised ALT and AST and with the cholestatic injury pattern described in the literature on oral steroids. Lipids move too: HDL falls and LDL tends to rise, which is the most consistent finding across oral compounds.
Both are dose and duration dependent, and both are the reason a four to six week block is the norm rather than an arbitrary preference.
Estrogen and gynecomastia
Methandienone aromatises, and the metabolite is methylestradiol, which is more potent than the estradiol produced from testosterone. That is why sensitive nipples and swelling appear on Dianabol more often than on a testosterone-only cycle at a comparable dose.
The response is blood work and, where indicated, a SERM or an aromatase inhibitor under medical supervision, not a guessed dose taken as a precaution.
What it does not do
- It does not build lean tissue quickly. The rapid weight is water and glycogen.
- It does not suit a cut. The water and the appetite work against a deficit.
- It does not replace a testosterone base. It suppresses the axis like every other steroid.
- It does not stay. Most of the scale change disappears within two weeks of stopping.
Dianabol versus Anavar
| Dianabol | Anavar | |
|---|---|---|
| Aromatises | Yes, to methylestradiol | No |
| Water retention | High | Minimal |
| Typical dose | 20 to 50 mg a day | 20 to 50 mg a day |
| Typical length | 4 to 6 weeks | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Best used for | Mass phase kickstart | Cutting, strength retention |
They are not interchangeable, and comparing them by milligrams is meaningless: one adds water and mass, the other adds density with almost no water.
Blood work
| When | What to test |
|---|---|
| Before | ALT, AST, bilirubin, lipids, total testosterone, estradiol, blood count |
| Week 3 or 4 | ALT, AST, bilirubin, lipids, blood pressure log |
| Four to six weeks after | The same panel plus total testosterone and LH |
Where it fits
The classic use is the first four weeks of a longer testosterone cycle, while the long ester builds up. It is a poor choice as a standalone first cycle: the water confuses the picture and the liver load arrives without the data a testosterone-only run would give.
For the base, see our testosterone cards; for the dry alternative, Anavar and oxandrolone.
Common mistakes
- Judging progress by body weight in week two.
- Running it for eight to twelve weeks because the scale was still moving.
- Adding an aromatase inhibitor as a precaution, then wondering why joints hurt.
- Using it alone as a first cycle.
- Skipping the mid-block liver panel.
