Trenbolone: Side Effects, Dose and Why Not First
Best Anabolic Steroids
Independent research & quality review desk
Trenbolone has the strongest side effect profile of the common injectables and the thinnest human evidence base. There are no controlled trials at athletic doses, so what is written about it comes from animal work, analytical studies and user reports. This page separates what is documented from what is repeated, and explains why it does not belong in a first cycle.
- It does not aromatise, so there is no estrogenic water retention.
- It is strongly androgenic: blood pressure, lipids and sleep are the usual casualties.
- Doses used are 200 to 400 mg a week, usually acetate every other day.
- Human trials at athletic doses do not exist; the evidence is preclinical and anecdotal.
- It shuts down natural production like every other steroid, and recovery is not easier.
What it is
Trenbolone is a 19-nor steroid, structurally close to nandrolone. It was developed for veterinary use, mainly to increase feed efficiency in cattle, and it was never approved as a human medicine. In bodybuilding it circulates as acetate, enanthate and a longer cyclohexylmethylcarbonate ester.
The compound does not aromatise, which is why it does not cause the water retention of Dianabol or the gynecomastia of a high-estrogen testosterone cycle. That absence of estrogen is the source of its reputation as a clean, dry compound, and it is also why people underestimate it.
Why it behaves differently
- No aromatisation. No methylestradiol, no water from estrogen, no classic gyno pathway.
- Strong androgenicity. Acne, hair loss in predisposed men, and blood pressure effects are more pronounced than with testosterone at comparable doses.
- Progestogenic activity. It binds the progesterone receptor, which is part of why prolactin-related effects and libido changes are reported.
- Not 5-alpha reducible. It does not need conversion to act in androgen-sensitive tissue, so the effect there is direct.
- Harsh on sleep and mood. Night sweats and insomnia are the most frequently reported practical problems.
Side effects
| System | What is reported |
|---|---|
| Cardiovascular | Rises in blood pressure, adverse lipid changes, and in users a heavier cardiovascular risk profile |
| Sleep | Insomnia, night sweats, vivid dreams - the most common reason people stop |
| Skin and hair | Acne, oily skin, accelerated hair loss in predisposed men |
| Mood | Irritability, aggression, low mood in some users |
| Hormonal | Suppression of the axis; prolactin-related effects reported |
| Respiratory | A cough immediately after injection, reported with the acetate ester |
| Liver | Not an alkylated oral, so liver stress is lower than with orals, but enzyme rises are still reported |
Dose and forms
There is no label to quote, because there is no approved human product. The numbers below are the ranges that appear consistently in user reports, not a clinical dose.
| Form | Typical weekly dose | Injection rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Acetate | 150 to 300 mg | Every other day |
| Enanthate | 200 to 400 mg | Twice a week |
| Long ester (cyclohexylmethylcarbonate) | 200 to 400 mg | Weekly |
How long
Six to eight weeks on acetate, eight to ten on enanthate. The limit is not muscle gain, it is tolerance: sleep, blood pressure and mood deteriorate over weeks, and most people stop for one of those reasons before the planned end.
What the data shows
That gap matters when reading forums: confident claims about exact effects at exact doses are extrapolations, not measurements.
Blood work
| When | What to test |
|---|---|
| Before | Blood count with haematocrit, lipids, ALT and AST, total testosterone, estradiol, prolactin, blood pressure baseline |
| Week 4 | Haematocrit, lipids, blood pressure log, prolactin if symptoms appear |
| After clearance | Total testosterone, LH, FSH, lipids and liver panel |
Detection
Trenbolone is detected through its metabolites rather than the parent drug, and analytical work describes both the marker profile and how the route of administration changes it. In practical terms, the drug clears in days while the markers outlast it.

Why not a first cycle
Three reasons, and none of them are moral.
- You cannot attribute side effects. If sleep collapses in week two of a first cycle, you have no baseline to compare and no second compound to blame.
- The evidence is thinner than for testosterone. Every serious question about a first compound is answered by data that exists for testosterone and does not exist for trenbolone.
- It is harder to stop cleanly. Long esters keep releasing for weeks, and the side effects follow the release.
For the version that produces information instead of surprises, see first steroid cycle.
Common mistakes
- Running it as a first cycle because it is described as "dry".
- Using a long ester to reduce injection frequency, then being unable to stop quickly.
- Ignoring sleep and blood pressure until the course collapses.
- Adding an aromatase inhibitor by habit: with no aromatisation, there is nothing to inhibit.
- Assuming a dry compound means a safe one.
